When we were younger, the most “anointed” pages of our home Bible were not the Psalms or Proverbs. Those ones were still crisp. I’m talking about the dirtiest, most thumbed pages. The ones filled with greetings and names that felt like holy shoutouts. Somewhere in there, the good apostle Paul mentions Claudia to Timothy. Claudia is our lastborn sister. (This home Bible, by the way, went missing some time back… as mum told us). You can imagine the excitement.
A whole Bible… and God decided to mention our Claudia? We were convinced heaven had a special file with our name on it. Years later, considering children’s names, I found myself returning to those same pages. Not for doctrine, but for names – unique names. But it doesn’t always work like that…
But here is what I learned. Those pages are not random. They are records. God’s way of saying names matter, people matter, and history matters. And that is where Chronicles begins. With a bang! An encyclopaedia of names. Some unpronounceable… But… nothing Is Random with God. ![]()
The first chapter of Chronicles opens with a genealogy beginning from Adam and traces through the early generations of humanity down to Noah and his sons. A simple list of names, or so it seems, yet intentional, ordered, and preserved. As we shared at the beginning, it feels like a dictionary of names for Christians
. But this genealogy study is full of depth. It begins with Adam, reminding us that all humanity shares a common origin. It then traces a specific line through Seth (remember the alternate son after the death of Abel), revealing that God is preserving a righteous lineage through which His purposes will unfold. Every name represents a life, & every life is part of a larger unfolding plan. Even generations that seem silent to us were not overlooked by God.
Our God works through time
through people
, through generations,
to accomplish His will. Here is something to look forward to. This genealogy all these names, ultimately point forward to Jesus Christ. We see (will see) Adam through Seth continuing through history until it reaches Christ, the “last Adam” 1 Corinthians 15:45 who comes to redeem what was lost in the first.
“And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
I Corinthians 15:45
What begins here in seed form finds its fulfillment in Christ. Once again, God – through Ezra, I highly believe he was the author, not that it matters much,
was not merely recording names, He was preparing the way for salvation.
Here is my encouragement to you. Your life is not random.
Just as these names were recorded with purpose, your life is part of God’s bigger plan. You may not see the full picture, but heaven does not overlook your place in God’s story. Be faithful in your generation. You may be feeling unseen, but God is a God who remembers, records, and works through ordinary lives to accomplish extraordinary purposes. There is even a bigger mystery in the names; most of those names are very highly related in their meaning and in their definition to the purpose or the character that the person carried. Yours too is not random, you too are not random
